ふうは【風波】

1 〔波と風〕 the wind and waves [sea]; 〔嵐〕 a storm; a tempest; 〔荒波〕 rough seas.

●海上は風波が荒い. The sea is rough. | The wind and waves are high.

・風波が立った[治まった]. The wind and sea rose [went down].

●風波に翻弄(_ほんろう)される be tossed about by the wind and waves.

●風波の高い海 a wind-whipped sea.

●風波を冒して in the face [teeth] of the wind and waves; battling against [with] the raging billows

・風波をしのぐ brave the wind and waves

・風波を静める Calm a storm; pour oil on troubled waters.

2 〔人生の難儀〕 a storm.

●人生の風波 the storm [rough and tumble] of life.

●さんざん世間の風波にもまれる be buffeted by the waves of adversity.

3 〔もめごと〕 (a) discord; a quarrel; a trouble.
